About Vitamin D:
Vitamin D is absorbed through the skin when exposed to ultraviolet b rays (UVB). This absorption depends on the latitude, the season, the time of day, age, the use of sunscreens and skin pigmentation (IOM, 1997).

In Canada, absorption of vitamin D through the skin does not happen during winter months (October to March). Unless recommending unthinkable amounts of certain foods, it is practically impossible to respect the daily recommended intake of vitamin D from food sources alone.

Health Canada specifically recommends that all adults ages 50 and up take a daily supplement of 10 micrograms (400 UI) of vitamin D to prevent osteoporosis and certain auto-immune related diseases. Taking a supplement is also recommended by the Canadian Cancer Society.
